Most people are capable of achieving success in life. While there are several factors and influences that could contribute to human success, research shows that language competence is the key factor in human learning and development. In other words, excellence in language competence is the key to success in life.
While all languages enable the development of the person and mastery of various skills and capabilities, English holds a unique position in the world. It is indisputably the dominant language medium for tapping into and interacting with the vast body of knowledge produced and held by many peoples, particularly those of the advanced nations. Australia is an advanced English-speaking nation. It is part of the developed world. Whether our children were born here or brought here by us when we migrated, they now belong to an amazing country where they have the potential to grow and develop in unprecedented ways. In time, if not already, our children may be called upon to participate in and contribute to Australia’s role as a leading nation. Underlying opportunities and performance in all fields of endeavour is the mastery of English.
While acknowledging that all languages are worthy of mastery, it must be admitted that in Australia, it is English that stands supreme. English is Australia’s lifeblood and its chief mode of communication and exchange. Therefore, it is in our interest to recognise that English is not only the passport to our children’s education and employment, but also that an excellent command of it is, indisputably, the single most important gateway to success in life.
